When you finally tire of Berlin and Prague, it's time to discover a new favourite in the East! Kiev is beautifully situated on the hills above the River Dnipro and has developed rapidly in recent years.
The Ukraine is one of the largest countries in European and Kiev, its capital, and the surrounding suburbs are home to more than 5 million inhabitants. The city was founded in the late 400s, and like the rest of the Ukraine, has a long and colourful history. For about 250 years Kiev was the capital of Russia, long before Moscow and St. Petersburg.
In Kiev there is fine culture, beautiful sights, good food and modern nightclubs. Stroll along the wide boulevards or take a seat in a street café. Kiev's main artery and most famous street, Khreschatyk, is lined with several shops, department stores, restaurants and bars. On weekends, when Khreschatyk is virtually a traffic-free zone, the atmosphere is reminiscent of Rome or Paris.
Why not take a walk to Liberty Park with stunning views of the River Dnieper, or hunt down a bargain among the stalls of souvenir street Andriyivsky Uzviz? Among the biggest attractions are the Sofia Cathedral and Pechersk Lavra, a complex of monuments from 1000-1700's.
Although easily accessible by foot, the subway will take you quickly and smoothly around the city.
