Football, shopping and hospitality

Manchester used to be one of the most important industrial cities in the world. Now it is more famous than ever for excellent shopping, fine restaurants and music – and of course football. The city is also home to a select collection of museums, art galleries and theatres.

Manchester is an inspiring example of a formerly industrial city that has successfully fought its way through a difficult economic period only to awaken to new life at the dawn this new millennium. Certainly the city bears the scars of its industrial past and does so with a stoic pride. But a vibrant music scene, a dazzling array of quality shops and a thorough renovation of the city centre have transformed Manchester into one of the most modern and exciting cities in Britain.

With its hundreds of restaurants Manchester is a great place to eat. Why not treat yourself to an unforgettable culinary experience on the famous Curry Mile? Or if your tastes are slightly less adventurous most pubs serve excellent traditional pub food, both at lunchtimes and in the evenings. And later on you can let your hair down in one the city’s many bars, discos or nightclubs or perhaps you’d be happier kicking off the evening’s entertainment with a visit to a concert.

In the last few years Manchester has developed into one of Britain’s best shopping cities. The city’s enormous Arndale Shopping Centre is located right at the heart of things. The less conventional, more youth-oriented shops tend to be concentrated around the Triangle and the Royal Exchange Centre.

Football fans too will think they’ve suddenly been transported to Heaven. With two teams of world renown to choose between, Manchester City, based at the Etihad football stadium and Manchester United with its hallowed home ground at Old Trafford, there is every chance of getting away to spend a cheerful afternoon watching one of the home teams taking on some of the biggest clubs in Europe.  And even after the game there’s no immediate need to snap out of your reverie – make your way down to Manchester United’s "Theatre of Dreams" – oh, and take the wife!
